Erik Ulmen is the Protective Security Advisor for the State of Rhode Island, from the US Department of Homeland Security.  He has been in this assignment since 2015.  Prior to his work in Rhode Island, he worked as the Branch Chief of Management Audits, for the Office of the Undersecretary of the National Protections and Programs Directorate of DHS.  Following graduation from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Ulmen started his career in the federal government as a Naval Officer in the US Navy Civil Engineer Corps, where he led Naval Construction Forces in both peacetime and wartime deployments.  Following his time with the NCF, he was assigned as the Public Works Officer for NAVFAC at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth VA.  After leaving the service, Mr. Ulmen was an intelligence officer for the federal government.  After leaving the intelligence community, he began his work with Homeland Security, first as a contractor, and then as a federal employee.  He was responsible for the development of a regional evaluation program, specifically looking at critical infrastructure resilience.

Mr. Ulmen is a native of upstate New York, and currently lives in Warwick with his family.
